Prescription Drug Round Up

The Round Up was held on April 28, 2012 in conjunction with the DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  More than 143,000 pills were turned in to the seven Washoe County collection sites that day -- more than any Round Up event in the past.

If you weren't able to attend and would like to dispose of your unwanted prescription drugs, permanent prescription drug drop boxes are located in the lobbies of the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff's Office. Prescription pills can be placed in the boxes Monday through Friday during reguarly business hours.

WHAT IS THE ROUND UP?

It's a safe place to dispose of expired, unwanted prescription drugs.

WHY?

Rates of prescription drug abuse are increasing throughout the country, and studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends.  The community is safer without unneeded prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet with the potential for abuse by young children or others. Proper disposal of unused medicines is a public health issue since the environment can become polluted by medicines that are thrown away or flushed down toilets.

WHAT CAN I BRING?

Unused/expired prescription medications, nonprescription pills, and prescription liquids in the original container. Feel free to remove any personal identification from the container.

WHAT IF I CAN'T ATTEND?

You have options. There are permanent drop boxes installed at Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff's Office in which you can deposit your unwanted prescriptions. If you're not able to make it to the Drug Round Up or to a permanent drop box site, please click here to learn safe disposal methods.
